Collapsible intact soil stabilisation using non-aqueous polymeric vehicle

2020

Abstract This paper presents the results of an experimental study that had the goal of understanding the effects of treatment with polyethylene glycol (PEG)/nanolime mixtures on collapsible soil behaviour. In a previous study, the use of pure PEG offered a good improvement in the stability of collapsible soil, but the stabilisation effect only lasted for a limited time. To investigate the stabilisation potential of PEG/nanolime systems for collapsible sand, different mixtures were prepared at increasing nanolime weight ratios. The suitability of the stabilised soil was examined on the basis of collapsibility, oedometer, shear, and water vapour permeability tests, and through optical microsc…

Polymer-coated Nanolimes Dispersions for Reduction, Deacidification and Consolidation of Ancient Paper

Nanolimes have been widely explored as nanomaterial for cultural heritage preservation. In particular, they have shown interesting properties to contrast the ageing of manuscripts, books and artistic works, opening up the possibility to store such items in a good quality state for longer. In the present work we reported an innovative nanolime-based formulation for paper restoration, which includes in its composition a reducing agent and a fibers consolidator as well. To formulate an efficient product, we deeply investigated the cellulose oxidation process with a multi-technique approach. The here presented formulation consists in a hydroalcoholic ternary dispersion of nanolimes coated with …

Development of conservation methods for the restoration of paper materials

Paper, one of the most common materials of Cultural Heritage, undergoes serious deterioration caused by physical, chemical and biological factors. One of the main causes of deterioration is the acidic and/or oxidative environment. The studies of deterioration and conservation of paper have been increasing and require further development of methods and treatments that can stabilize and strengthen the paper. Various conservation treatments are being applied to model and to historical paper by using different chemicals methods. Their effectiveness for conservation and restoration are under study. Internal and external factors degrade the paper by promoting various reaction pathways. The two mo…
